La collection

La collection Recherches sur les Rhétoriques Religieuses («3 R») a pour objet le langage dans ses rapports avec le divin, les formes de communication avec les dieux, les différentes manières de dire la conscience et le sentiment religieux. Elle entend fournir des instruments et ouvrir des voies nouvelles pour une meilleure compréhension de la rhétorique et de la religion.

Le présent ouvrage

Dans les civilisations de l'Antiquité, où le sacré est partout, tout acte un peu solennel est placé sous l'égide des dieux, sans lesquels aucune action valide n'est concevable. L'homme s'adresse à la divinité en particulier par des prières, dont les textes grecs et latins nous ont transmis de nombreux témoignages. Le présent ouvrage se propose de saisir la diversité de ces discours aux dieux, en présentant un corpus de prières païennes grecques et romaines. L'ensemble réunit environ deux cents textes couvrant toute l'Antiquité et représentant des sources et des genres divers : prières formulaires du rituel, prières littéraires en vers ou en prose, documents privés, textes mystiques ou magiques, etc. Les textes sont donnés dans la langue originale, avec une traduction nouvelle et un commentaire.

Ce volume est le compagnon de la Bibliographie analytique de la prière grecque et romaine qui constituait le volume 1 de la collection.

The series

The series Research on the Rhetorics of Religion («3 R») studies language in its relationship to the holy, the means of communicating with the gods, the different ways of expressing one's awareness of the divine and the feelings which it elic-its. Its goal is to provide instruments of analysis and to open avenues of research which will allow a better grasp of rhetoric and religion.

The present book

In the civilisations of the Ancient World, where the holy was omnipresent, any undertaking of importance was placed under the aegis of the gods, for no other course of action was conceivable. Humankind addressed the divinity in particular through prayer, a means of communication of which Greek and Latin texts furnish numerous examples. The goal of the present work is to reflect the diversity of these speech acts to the gods in presenting a corpus of Greek and Roman pagan prayer. The authors have selected some two hundred texts covering all of the ancient period and representing different sources and genres : formulaic prayers of ritual, literary prayers in verse and prose, private writings, mystical and magical texts, and so on. They have presented the documents in the original tongue with a new translation and a commentary.

This is the companion volume to the Analytic Bibliography of Greek and Roman Prayer (Bibliographie analytique de la prière grecque et romaine) which began the collection.
