Hans van der Ham (b. Eindhoven 1960) studied classical piano at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and the Utrechts Conservatorium. He then studied autonomous art at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam, where he graduated with paintings, drawings and graphics. However, for over 20 years, Van der Ham was mainly active as a sculptor and became known for his black clay sculptures. Fragile souls, wrapped in rock-hard material. But his indefinable worlds on paper, made from gouache or black ink, also characterize his oeuvre. From 2020, the need arose to return to his old metier and make a new start from spatial work with paintings in various formats.
Van der Ham has been working as an independent visual artist in Rotterdam since 1989 and has held regular exhibitions at home and abroad. Until his closure in 2018, his work was represented by Galerie Nouvelles Images in The Hague. Since 2023, his work has been represented by gallery Stigter Van Doesburg, Amsterdam and by galleri KANT, Copenhagen. His work is included in several museum and corporate collections. In 2022, Van der Ham's sculpture ARMOUR was unveiled on Mathenesserlaan in Rotterdam. In 2012, he co-founded Garage Rotterdam together with a Rotterdam patron, acting as curator and artistic director until 2015. He regularly creates exhibitions, including for Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, where as guest curator, he created the 2018 exhibition ANIMA MUNDI.
