English summary: At a time when science claims and believes that it can answer, according to the Vulgate of the Astrophysicists, humanity's eternal questions (Where do we come from? or Where are we going ?)-the "Big Bang" as the beginning, and the death of the sun as the end-this is the perfect opportunity to profit from Reynal Sorel's insights in this intellectually challenging and dense little book. In exploring the two major sections, Chaos and Eternity (what "to be", "to be born", and "not to be" may signify)-in other words, the beginning, the future and the end referred to by pre-Socratic philosophers and cosmogonic Greek myths-the author specifically shows that the hypothesis of an ex nihilo creation was totally incomprehensible in ancient Greek philosophy. Reynal Sorel previously published Les Cosmogonies grecques, Orphe et l'orphisme and Critique de la raison mythologique. French description: L'idee d'une creation ex nihilo, envisagee a titre de supposition par la pensee grecque, a ete aussitot rejetee comme pure absurdite. Cette condamnation, explicitement soutenue des Parmenide, vise-t-elle le grand mythe cosmogonique de reference qui, chez Hesiode, fait naitre en premier Chaos? Brise-t-elle une reception du monde entre un muthos et un logos? Cet essai veut demontrer qu'il n'en est rien, a condition de bien entendre le mythe qui n'enregistre pas une naissance ponctuelle a partir du neant, mais decrit un processus toujours reproduit: le retrait incessant de l'infigurable (seule definition possible de Chaos) pour laisser advenir ce qui n'est pas lui, a savoir un monde en train de se configurer... sans cesse. Alors que le muthos traque ce sans quoi les choses peuvent apparaitre, le logos definit ce d'ou elles adviennent et retournent. Les Anciens ont trace deux itineraires: celui qui debouche sur l'inherence de ce d'ou les choses proviennent et celui qui mene au devoilement de ce sans quoi elles poussent. Le fameux antagonisme muthos-logos est a reconsiderer... a l'aune de l'eternite et de son etonnante condition originelle: l'infigurable Chaos dont l'incessant retrait offre au monde la condition de son discernement. L'ouvrage invite a suivre ces cheminements paralleles d'une pensee qui se reflechit dans son refus du neant. Raymond Sorel est l'auteur d'articles et d'ouvrages sur la philosophie et la pensee religieuse grecques (Les Cosmogonies grecques, 1994 Orphee et l'orphisme, 1995) et d'un essai sur l'interpretation des mythes, Critique de la raison mythologique (2000).
