These are letters I wrote in 1996. They show the struggle I went through to establish myself here. I had terrible trouble finding housing, and I slept on couches and hard-wood floors for long stretches of time. I spent most of my time living in Brooklyn in an art loft space with two roommates. I loved the nightlife at this time in my life and I went to bars and clubs, and tried out for rock bands. It was hard for me, because housing costs were high and job competition was steep. But I loved New York City, and I was determined to make it my home for many years to come.
