Paddy Coil is in a Belfast pub having a Guinness and ploughman's lunch. He is waiting to be joined by CIA Agent Scot Lewis - they have a lead in Londonderry - a body floating in the Foyle - an IRA gun runner thought to have fallen foul to the UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force) or UFF (the Ulster Freedom Fighters part of the UDA Ulster Defence Association). MI5 and police have periodically launched major crackdowns, including recent pressure to dismantle UVF and UDA criminal networks. However on the ground often use them to their own advantage. Special Branch and MI5 clash over the body in the Foyle. Scot goes missing in Londonderry, later his body turns up - tortured and killed. C. I. O'Donnell comes out of undercover and plays a dangerous game to catch the killer of both the body in the Foyle and Agent Scot. MI5 agents interfere with his investigation as loyalties and London politics come in to play. An unexpected allay John Toombs the IRA commander - feeding O'Donnell information to catch the killer. While once again O'Donnell is unaware to Toombs in the background. Saoirse back in Waterford is tasked by Toombs to help O'Donnell unaware that she has fallen in love with Paddy Coil and would do anything for him. A hand to hand fight on a barge on the river Foyle brings the killer out for a final showdown with a deadly result. Toombs quietly slips away across the border to Donegall and fades away - until the next encounter.
