Architectures et espaces fictifs dans l'Antiquité

L'ouvrage comprend trois parties. La première partie est consacrée aux représentations d'architecture en peinture (vases peints d'Italie méridionale, décor mural pompéien). Les auteurs soulignent la richesse et la complexité des effets de trompe-l'oeil recherchés par les peintres. En effet, ils multiplient les jeux d'illusion non seulement avec les architectures réelles qui leur servent de référent mais aussi avec l'architecture dans laquelle s'inscrivent les décors peints et surtout stuqués. La deuxième partie porte sur les descriptions littéraires (ekphrasis) : en décrivant des architectures plus ou moins inspirées de monuments existants ou de monuments fictifs présents dans les modèles littéraires, les poètes projettent sur ces édifices une grille de lecture qui témoigne du regard porté par les contemporains sur leur environnement architectural. Enfin, la dernière partie s'interroge
sur le mouvement de retour de la fiction sur la réalité : dans les jardins ou les sanctuaires l'espace réel est informé par la fiction architecturale ; les constructions éphémères ou les graffiti pompéiens eux-mêmes témoignent de la prégnance de l'imaginaire architectural sur la perception de l'espace réel.

This book is composed of three parts. The first part is devoted to painted architectural representations (painted vases from southern Italy, decorated murals in Pompei). The authors underline the meaningfulness and the complexity of the trompe-l'oeil effects attempted by painters. Indeed, artists multiply optical illusions not only when they paint actual architectural monuments, but also on architectural structures where painted and especially stucco-covered decors are inserted. The second part focuses on literary descriptions (ekphrasis). When poets describe architectures which are more or less inspired by existing monuments or by fictional ones derived from literary works, they project on these buildings-in-discourse a reading grid which reflects the views of their contemporaries on their architectural environment. The third and final part investigates the feedback effect of fiction on reality. In existing gardens and sanctuaries, real space is revisited by architectural fiction ; ephemeral buildings or Pompeian graffitis themselves show the pervasive impact of architectural imagination on the way real space may be
perceived.
