This book originates from the widespread concern about the ageing of the population, experienced or expected in many industrialised countries, and its possible impact on economic growth and sustainability of social security programmes. Part 1 contains chapters dealing with the developments underlying this concern and with various pathways available to counter the growth and labour market consequences of such developments by policy measures aiming at influencing mandatory or actual retirement ages.

Part 2 deals with other approaches to the issue. In the final section of his Introduction to the volume the editor, Han Emanuel, elaborates on these alternative approaches and attempts to depict a wider context.
