Ce livre est consacré aux hymnes en prose (or. XXXVII-XLVI) d'Aelius Aristide - le plus riche corpus d'éloges rhétoriques de dieux qui soit conservé. Une étude synthétique (la première du genre) analyse le statut privilégié de ces discours dans la vie et dans la carrière de l'orateur, la poétique qu'ils mettent en oeuvre, leur ancrage dans la société gréco-romaine et la religiosité dont ils témoignent. Chaque texte, accompagné d'une traduction, est précédé d'une notice. Les notices présentent les circonstances de composition et de prononciation, la structure, l'esprit général et les caractéristiques principales de chaque hymne, en précisant le contexte historique, institutionnel et civique de la performance oratoire. Fondé sur l'édition Keil (Berlin, 1898), le texte grec est révisé et libéré de conjectures inutiles.

The present book

This book focuses on Aelius Aristides' prose hymns (or. XXXVII-XLVI). These texts constitute the richest corpus of rhetorical eulogies of gods which we possess. The special status that these discourses had in the orator's life and career are being analyzed for the very first time, along with the poetics they put to work, the ways in which they are deeply anchored in Greco-Roman Society and the religiosity they display. Presented with a translation, each text is preceded by a note that relates the circumstances of its composition and prononciation, continents on its structure, general spirit and main features. These notes also help clarify the historical, institutional and civic context of the oratory performance. Based on the 1898 Keil's Berlin edition, the Greek text has been revised and freed from irrelevant conjectures.
