Omschrijving

This book comprises the proceedings of the XXXIV Congress of the European Lawyers’ Union (U.A.E.) held on 25 June 2021 under the theme A European Union of Justice: challenges for judicial cooperation in Europe.

The 2021 U.A.E. Congress, exceptionally held via videoconference due to the COVID pandemic, brought together an impressive roster of speakers, including representatives from the EU and national courts, EU institutions, academia, and experienced practitioners. EU Commissioner for Justice Reynders’ keynote speech started by setting out the Commission’s priorities and new initiatives and was followed by three working sessions.

Session 1 reviewed recent developments in judicial cooperation in civil and commercial matters and included interventions by Judge Giuseppe Buffone and private practitioners Boris Dostal and Cesar Garcia de Quevedo, moderated by U.A.E. Honorary President Gabriele Donà.

Session 2 considered judicial cooperation in criminal matters, joining the perspectives of Eurojust Member António Cluny, Professor Kimmo Nuotio, EC Coordinator for Victim’s Rights Katarzyna Janicka-Pawlowska, and lawyer David Silva Ramalho, with the moderation of U.A.E. Secretary-General Nicole Hirst.

Finally, Session 3 discussed the challenges for judicial cooperation resulting from Rule of Law concerns in some Member States, with the important contributions of Judge Camelia Toader of the European Court of Justice, Judge José Igreja Matos of the Porto Court of Appeals, and Professor Laurent Pech, who were moderated by U.A.E. Honorary President Carlos Botelho Moniz.

This book, collecting the speakers’ thoughtful interventions and the lively debate which followed, is intended for both professionals in law and all those interested in thedevelopment of the European Union.
