When ten-year-old Jimmy Tucker volunteers to walk his neighbor's dog, he has no idea what he's getting into!

Jimmy and Lance, a border collie, immediately become best friends. Trouble is, when he's not enjoying his time with Jimmy, Lance has to keep doing what he's done his entire life—live outside all alone on his owner's property. Upset by the dog's situation, Jimmy pleads with his mother, "We gotta help Lance!"

Working as a team, Jimmy and Margaret, his mother, pull off a dog rescue and move with Lance to another town. There, they discover Lance is a troubled dog that can't always be trusted to behave. Despite being bitten by Lance, Jimmy's mother remains as determined as her son to give the dog they rescued a better life.
