Né à Deyang, dans la province du Sichuan (Chine) en 1964, Gao Bo apprend tout d'abord à dessiner, notamment des portraits de Marx, Lénine ou Mao à l'Institut des beaux-arts du Sichuan (Chongqing). C'est par la photographie qu'il sera révélé, lauréat du prix Hassleblad en 1986, puis 1^er prix (Oeil d'or) à la première édition de Visa pour l'image (Perpignan, 1989).

Installé en France de 1990 à 1994 (représenté par l'agence et la galerie VU'), il vit et travaille aujourd'hui à Pékin.

Pourtant, Gao Bo n'est pas vraiment photographe, ou plutôt, pas uniquement : plasticien, peintre, performer... c'est un créateur complet dont les oeuvres ne peuvent se classer si simplement, lui qui, par exemple, tire ses photographies sur galets, sur toile, sur ardoise... et même sur la peau. Et qui, auparavant, lorsqu'il tirait sur papier, ne pouvait s'empêcher de recouvrir ses tirages de peinture, puis de gratter la peinture pour retrouver l'image. Chaque oeuvre de Gao Bo est ainsi perpétuellement vivante et mouvante.

Gao Bo was born in 1964 in Deyang, in the province of Sichuan (China). He started out by learning to draw - particularly portraits of Marx, Lenin and Mao - at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Chongqing. He went on to make a name for himself as a photographer, winning the Hasselblad Prize in1986 then First Prize (Oeil d'or) at the inaugural Visa pour l'Image photo festival (Perpignan, 1989). After living in France from 1990 to 1994, where he was represented by the VU' agency and gallery, he now lives and works in Beijing.

But Gao Bo isn't really - or isn't only - a photographer. He's a plastic artist, painter and performer - a multifaceted creator whose work is difficult to classify. For example, he prints his photographs on pebbles, canvas, slate and even skin, and when he used to print them on paper, he covered them with paint which he then scratched off to retrieve the image below. All Gao Bo's works, therefore, are living, moving creations.
